3. You feel guilty

One common pattern often associated with strong narcissistic traits is difficulty taking responsibility for mistakes or negative behavior. In conversations about hurt feelings or ongoing emotional strain, these individuals may avoid listening or acknowledging concerns. Instead, they may redirect the discussion, shift blame, or create feelings of guilt, leaving the other person feeling as though they are always at fault.

Over time, this dynamic can lead someone to apologize unnecessarily, simply to keep the peace or restore a sense of calm. This pattern reflects an unhealthy interaction style, as accountability and mutual understanding are rarely present. Apologies may become one-sided, while acknowledgment or change from the other person remains unlikely.

When these dynamics persist for an extended period, it’s not uncommon to experience sadness, self-doubt, or emotional exhaustion. Even after stepping away from the relationship, lingering feelings of guilt or inadequacy can remain. Rebuilding confidence and emotional balance often takes time and, in many cases, thoughtful self-reflection or professional support can be helpful.
