Could depression lead to schizophrenia?

Depression doesn’t trigger schizophrenia. Even some patients with severe clinical depression suffer from symptoms of psychosis, like hallucinations, delusions, and even disordered thinking and speech.

Naturally, these symptoms could represent a subtype of depression known as “psychotic depression” or even “depression with psychotic features”. Of course, this kind of condition has previously been linked to other severe depressive symptoms.

Besides, people who suffer from depression could have a greater chance of developing psychosis. Also, depression is usually seen in people who are also at a higher risk of suffering from schizophrenia before the occurrence of any other psychosis symptom.
