The Bottom Line

Most people do have a budget, but many do it in their heads. If you’re keeping separate accounts or have no idea where all the money in your home goes, it’s time to get the numbers out into a neutral, equally accessible space.

Dealing with finances and money troubles is a necessary component of any long-term partnership. Our best tip for avoiding arguments about finances is to have regular conversations about it and to go into these talks remembering that you and your partner are a team.

Don’t make each other enemies by doling out accusations. Instead, join forces against a common challenge within your situation and work together to get over this hump. Your discussions will be much more enjoyable, not to mention productive.

Even if your arguments aren’t about dishonesty, an excellent place to ground the debate is in the cold-hard facts of who spent what and when.
