Gut Feelings: Are They Reliable? And Here Are 5 You Should NEVER Ignore

But first…What do gut feelings actually feel like?

Have you ever experienced a nagging feeling of unease about a situation, and no matter what you do, you can’t seem to shake the feeling? Or have you felt suspicious about someone you’ve JUST met, again without an explanation?

You might not be able to explain your feelings logically, but you know something is off. Or maybe a sense of calm floods you after a difficult decision, convincing you you’re doing the honorable thing.

Gut feelings can spur on a large spectrum of sensations, some similar to the physical feelings associated with anxiety. Other, more positive feelings might seem to confirm your decision.

Some people describe gut feelings as an internal voice. But you’ll usually “hear” your gut talking to you in other ways. These can include:

  • Goosebumps or prickling
  • A sinking feeling in your stomach
  • A flash of clarity
  • Tension or tightness in your body
  • Sweaty palms or feet
  • “Butterflies” in your belly or nausea
  • Feelings of peace, safety, or happiness (after making a decision)
  • Thoughts that keep returning to a specific person or situation

Take Note: These feelings tend to hit you unexpectedly, but they may not always be overwhelming. You might experience them as the most basic sense of uneasiness.

But they could also feel so powerful you can’t ignore them. If your brain encourages you to notice these feelings, you’re probably not far off your mark.
