What are the signs?

When we think about abuse, physical abuse probably comes to mind first. But abuse can take shape in many forms. Emotional abuse is just as severe as the physical kind, and often foregoes it. Sometimes they happen concurrently.

If you’ve been emotionally abused, you should first know that it’s not your fault. There’s also no “right” way to feel about it. It isn’t normal, but your feelings Definitely are. Here are some of the signs:

  • Name-calling
  • Yelling
  • Isolating
  • Gaslighting
  • Subtle or overt threats
  • Insults or ridicules
  • Controlling
  • Invasion of privacy
  • Punishing you for not going along with what they say
