How can you cope with health anxiety?

Do you often fear that your headaches, rash, or insomnia are signs of a medical illness? While excessively worrying you’re developing a serious medical condition may be confusing to some, for anyone who experiences health anxiety (also known as hypochondria), these concerns are disruptive, real, and make it difficult to deal with.

Those who struggle with health anxiety can spend hours checking for symptoms, seeking reassurance, and often changing their daily lives to avoid potential health risks. They pay excessive attention to body sensations and think minor symptoms are an indicator of an underlying illness.

For instance, a migraine is a red flag of a potential brain tumor, or normal hair loss is misinterpreted as thyroid cancer. From an outside perspective, these fears are unreasonable, but for someone who does obsessive self-checking, these fears feel terrifying, vivid, and real!

Coping with hypochondria isn’t something that can be done overnight, but it’s also an anxiety disorder that can be highly treatable, according to experts. The good thing is that you can work with yourself, so we’ve rounded up some tips on how to cope with health anxiety and eventually overcome it. Let’s get started!
