Acknowledge Their Control Issues

Are you sick of hearing about how you’re doing everything wrong? Whatever it is, it’s not the right way of doing it because you should be doing everything just like your toxic in-law wants you to.

They want to make your life miserable and challenging and maybe even get you away from your spouse, and they’ll control and manipulate as much as they can to make it happen.

Oftentimes we take remarks from our spouse’s family members personally, especially if it’s about something meaningful to us, like our parenting style, marriage, or work ethic. But remember this: Your toxic in-laws’ comments are NOT about you. They’re a reflection of them.

Generally, the most touchy issues are about who will have the most leverage. People are fearful of losing total control. They also don’t like acknowledging that they’re getting older and losing some of their authority.

Once you acknowledge this, you can gently tell them that this is how you choose to manage your household.
