Hallucinations

Hallucinations involve fictitious experiences. Hearing voices is the most common hallucination in people with schizophrenia. The voices may criticize the person’s actions, scold them, or issue orders. Less frequent ones include the inability to see what is actually there, the inability to smell familiar scents, the experience of a peculiar taste in the mouth, and the sensation of pressure on the skin when nothing is pressing against it.

Chaotic speech and thinking

Most patients who have schizophrenia experience chaotic thoughts, and they aren’t able to speak coherently. When they were asked simple questions such as “Where do you live?” or “What’s your name?” some hesitated to respond while others gave unrelated answers.

Furthermore, those who have disorganized thinking will also start saying things that don’t make sense. They will also switch topics every couple of minutes, making it difficult to understand what they say.

Negative symptoms

This describes a diminished or absent capacity to carry out routine tasks. For instance, they might not take care of their personal hygiene or exhibit a lack of emotion by speaking monotonously, avoiding eye contact, or changing their facial expressions. Also, the person can stop enjoying routine tasks, withdraw socially, or be incapable of enjoying themselves.

Various patients who experienced symptoms of schizophrenia also said that they felt less energetic and overwhelmed, and suddenly they lost interest in life and things they used to enjoy in the past.
