Entering Retirement? Here Are 6 Ways to Ensure Your Marriage Doesn’t Suffer

Personal Space

One of the biggest secrets to surviving retirement? Give each other some personal space! Having your spouse with you all day, every day, all of a sudden, can be very overwhelming. You can start to feel intrusive at certain times and places. And your partner might feel the same way.

This might lead to many arguments. One spouse shouldn’t assume that they’ll automatically be included in the activities the other partner has planned. Nor should either spouse feel like they have to spend less time with their friends to spend more time with one another.

The only way to avoid it is to create some form of personal space for each other. You should communicate the boundaries each of you has and don’t intervene there.

This can be a tough adjustment in cases where a spouse heavily relies on their co-workers for socialization during their working years.

So to conclude, instead of wondering if your marriage survives retirement, you should be thinking about how you can improve your relationship with your significant other. If it’s been overlooked over the years, it’ll take time and effort to improve it.

Try sitting down with a bottle of wine and spending some time getting to know each other again. As long as you both put in the effort, you can conquer your golden years together!
