Lie-detection tip: Listen for overselling expressions

Research has revealed that verbal cues are some of the most accurate indicators of someone lying. These linguistic cues include overselling your point. Declarations of emphasis, called oversell expressions, frequently exhibit active impression management, meaning that the liar is trying to give the appearance of innocence.

Consider a person who says that they’re ” 100%” not guilty or is “absolutely, completely positive that …” People often infiltrate words like these into a conversation to present an image of confidence.

But stop and really think about this lie-detection tip: If you were asked if you had ever robbed a store, you would most likely answer “No” not, “I’m sure I never have” or “I promise I never have.” When asked a question, the most direct answer is usually honest.
