4 Worst Mistakes Seniors Make With Their Adult Children

1. Do not take things personally.

This mistake, when it comes to adult children, is one that happens most often and is hard to manage. You should not take things personally, be it that your children are not calling you every day, that they cannot stay long on the phone, or that your grandchildren may be rude or avoid answering your questions. It can be tough when your son or daughter does not use the advice you gave them, but you cannot think that they no longer love you or that they are doing it on purpose.

A common mistake with adult children is to believe that they are going to follow in your footsteps and do things as you envisioned for them. Our children are going to have their own paths, down to how they choose to raise their children and how they are going to do things. Expecting them to do what you want them to do and how you want them to do it, even when you give them advice, is unrealistic.

All you can do is help them when you can and hope they make good choices for them, which may look completely different than what you have in mind. And sometimes, if it keeps happening that they do not listen and you make the mistake of taking things personally, you may find yourself faced with another problem, aside from the adult children’s mistake: you may find that you have to change something in the way you think or act.
