8 Shocking Mind Games Sociopaths Use to Keep You Under Their Thumb

January 17, 2025 · Relationships
spot a sociopath, mind games

Did you know that sociopaths use some mind games to keep you under their thumb?

As much as we might hate it, some people in our lives could be sociopaths. If you ever feel like you’re gaslighted, manipulated, or tricked, it might be because it’s indeed true. Or, of course, you spend a lot of time with someone who has these tendencies. We know it can be hard to deal with something like this, whether it’s happening with your partner, at work, or with a friend.

The good news is that the more you know about sociopaths, the faster you can escape a toxic relationship and the mind games they use to keep you under their thumb. But before we talk about all these weird tactics, you’re probably curious to know what exactly a sociopath is.

As experts point out, a sociopath is a strong manipulator who can easily control those around them. They’re more likely to lie for personal gain, have impulsive behavior and a lack of empathy, use their charm and intelligence to manipulate others, and even tend to get involved in fights and physical violence.

Want to stay safe from harmful situations? We teamed up with psychologists to reveal the sneaky mind games sociopaths use to manipulate you. Dive in and uncover their tricks!

1. They continually flatter you

A sociopath will try their best to do whatever they can to gain your trust, and sometimes that means dishing out flattering remarks and compliments. But if you know what to look for, you can stop this behavior before it’s too late.

Let’s take compliments, for example—we all love them because they make us feel good and valued. But with a person like this, flattery feels like too much. Instead of telling you that they like spending time with you, they take it to the next level by saying that they’ve never met someone as amazing as you and can’t imagine spending their lives without you. This can happen even if you only know each other for a short time.

Of course, they might only be very enthusiastic people, so it’s all about trusting your gut here. If something feels too good to be true, you’d better listen to what your heart says.

2. They seem too honest

Another mind game sociopaths don’t feel afraid to use is their false honesty. These people are so comfortable lying that they’re very confident in what they say and therefore come off as totally honest when trying to get their way.

Psychologists say they’re so good at what they do that sometimes it’s pretty hard to distinguish the truth from a lie. You can talk to them and be 100% confident that they were sincere, but turn around and discover that you were actually manipulated. Unfortunately, seduction, lying, and manipulation are all mind games sociopaths use to keep you under their thumb.

3. They’re too charming

Sociopaths are not afraid to use manipulation and charm to get away with what they want. They know everything about the art of charming people, but one easy way to detect whether it’s a mind game or genuine behavior is to ask yourself how you feel.

At first, you might be delighted to be around someone as alluring as them, but after a while, you’ll probably feel confused or even scared. As we’ve previously mentioned, trusting your gut is always key, especially when you meet new people.

If you come across someone who seems a little bit “too” charming or nice for your taste, it might be better to take your time to get to know them. Experts recommend you also take everything they say with a grain of salt so that you’re not subject to their potential mind games in the future.

4. They try to confuse you

As you can already tell, sociopaths like to play mind games, and they can easily manipulate others by confusing them and twisting their words in their favor. For example, they might say something and then claim they didn’t say anything.

Here’s how a sociopath might act in different situations: as a boss, they might take credit for your accomplishments, and as a coworker, they might spread a rumor about you and then look surprised when it comes back to haunt them. On the other hand, as a romantic partner, they might claim that you made up a concern and deny that they acknowledged it.

These are only tricks to confuse you so they can feel in control. Pay attention to behaviors like this, because it’s a sneaky form of manipulation and can make you doubt yourself.

5. They’re a little threatening

Sociopaths thrive on control, and in their relentless pursuit of it, they may resort to manipulative tactics—even offering occasional treats or rewards to lure you in. For instance, they might say things like, “You’ll be sorry for this,” or, in extreme cases, threaten to harm themselves if you don’t comply with their demands.

This toxic behavior places immense pressure on you, often forcing you to agree to things you wouldn’t normally consider (that’s manipulation at its finest). Being in a relationship with a sociopath who constantly plays mind games can be deeply damaging—and unfortunately, it’s not always easy to recognize. Sometimes, it’s all about the vibe. If something feels off and they don’t pass the vibe check, trust your gut because it’s often your first warning sign.

6. You receive a special treatment from them

They might tell you they don’t get along with their family, have no close friends, and aren’t on good terms with coworkers. Yet somehow, they’re incredibly sweet to you, leaving you wondering why others dislike them so much.

If you’re the only one who gets along with them, it’s worth taking a closer look. Keep your eyes open and observe how they interact with others or how people perceive them. This insight can help you see past the charm and spot any red flags. Don’t fall for their mind games, because they know how to keep you under their thumb!

7. You have a gut feeling

When dealing with a sociopath, your gut often knows before you do. Something feels off, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. According to psychologists, this instinct could be your first—and sometimes only—warning sign.

If your gut tells you you’re being manipulated, lied to, or gaslighted, trust it. Sociopaths are masters of mind games, and anyone can fall into their trap. Recognizing the signs early on is key to protecting your peace and steering clear of their toxic behavior.

8. They don’t have any regrets…

…For their behavior!

Let’s say you catch a sociopath mid-lie or in the middle of a manipulative mind game. While most people might feel embarrassed, admit their mistake, and even apologize, a sociopath will do the exact opposite. They’ll double down, twist the story, and convince you that you’re the one at fault.

If you’re not grounded, you might fall for their tricks. Sociopaths have no problem lying, distorting the truth, and showing zero empathy for how their actions affect others. Even when they hurt someone, they feel no remorse—only entitlement to their behavior.

Sadly, calling them out won’t necessarily stop their toxic actions. They likely won’t care how much their behavior impacts you or anyone else. This lack of accountability is a major red flag, and spotting it early on can help you protect yourself from their negative influence.

What are your thoughts on these mind games sociopaths use to keep control? Have you ever dealt with someone like this? How did you break free from the situation? We’d love to hear your story, so leave a comment below and join the conversation!
