Adapting To Change Is Never Easy…But It’s Not Impossible!

The only inevitable thing in life is change. A man loses his job. A woman discovers her husband of 25 years was cheating on her. Another person discovered he has cancer at the age of 56.

Adapting to change is difficult. In fact, just the mere possibility of change gives some people anxiety. No matter how you look at it, change makes us feel wretched, and if we could somehow avoid it, we definitely would. Actually, we frequently do!

We tend to be creatures of habit, and wanting to feel a sense of security is natural. So when we’re knocked on our behinds with some kind of terrible news, we go into a tailspin.

How we get ourselves out of particular situations will be our ability to adapt to this unknown commodity. If you’ve experienced a loss or a move to another city due to retirement, you may feel like you’ve been pushed into a vortex of disorder.

Like the seasons changing, we need to move forward and let go of the past…essentially shedding our leaves and getting through the cold of winter. We need to keep pushing ahead even though it may seem like we’re going in circles at times.

Find Self-Love

When you deliberately invest time in your personal growth, you search for new ways to understand and challenge yourself. Growth is what happens outside your comfort zone, and what better way to step out of that zone than through adapting to change?

Sometimes when life slams into you and you land on your bottom, you can really begin to despise yourself. You might hate yourself for not being more thoughtful, responsive, or doing your best at the time. But don’t forget, we’re all human.

And we can sometimes really stink at life. You can make yourself feel like dirt, but this just allows life to feel even more gloomy. Self-hatred manifests in all kinds of harmful behaviors like addiction, isolation, and bulimia.

You can say, “Me, doubting myself, stops today,” and comprehend that you don’t have to internalize the pain of going through change. Make a list of the things you’ve achieved in the past and even all your positive traits.

Now go over this list until you’ve better assured yourself.

Change Your Perspective

People who can easily adapt to anything tend to deal well with change. They look for ways to see the positive in situations, and they can resist getting discouraged. A good example would be taking medicine. It tastes completely awful, but the end result is worth it.

As much as adapting to change is painful, it’s also something that makes you grow. Change can help usher in new friends, business opportunities, and hobbies. It can come in many other forms as well. Let’s say that you’re adapting to change by moving to a new town.

It may take a while to feel comfortable, but along your way, you might meet your future partner, a new friend, or you might even be inspired to start a new business. Be open to new changes, and embrace the unexpected gems that await you.

It might take more time to see these benefits but remain hopeful and motivated, and you’ll see the positives that come from rebuilding your perspective.

Let Go Of Regrets

Regrets can have a huge impact on how you react to adapting to change, and they generally hold you back in life. Being able to let go of your regrets is crucial to you being able to move forward in your life.

It’s the possibilities of adapting to change that present you with many opportunities in life. So if you’re looking back on the past, you might miss the prospects of the present and even the future.

You can’t change what you did or didn’t do when you were younger, so learn to let it go. The greatest power you have now is to decide to live in your present and future life.

A terrific exercise you can do to deal with the regrets in your life is to blow up a heap of helium balloons and, on each one, write a regret you may have. Then, let that balloon float away. As your balloons drift off, say goodbye to each regret out loud.

This is a simple step towards adapting to change, but it’s an effective way of dealing with the heap of regrets you’ve accumulated in your life.

Find Support

You can truly learn from other people how they survived adapting to change and different transitions. They can look at it more objectively than you, and you can also take solace in the fact that you’re not alone in this matter.

Someone has at some point or is going through the same troubles as you. Admitting that we need help is always challenging, but you’ll be surprised by how positive people tend to respond.

A published author and life coach, Tony Robbins, believes that the secret to success is understanding how to accept joy AND pain. “If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.”

You should try to find support from other individuals while adapting to change. There are more people willing to support you than you probably realize. And let’s face it, we can’t do everything on our own.

Face Your Fears

Adapting to change can be scary, and it’s all about stepping out of your comfort zone. But we must get our subconscious familiar with us stepping out of that comfort zone and doing the hard stuff.

In fact, we want to be able to train it to believe that stepping out of that zone and doing terrifying things is a normal thing to do. Jot down a few things that you’ve been too frightened to do. Establish a plan, and then go conquer your fears.

Try to have some fun, challenge yourself, and get used to the feeling of being frightened. Basically, just step into the unknown! If you have a fear of public speaking, try to involve yourself in some activities to get over this fear.

Grab a group of friends and join in on a karaoke night. Hate singing? How about trying some stand-up? To overcome your fear of public speaking, put yourself in a situation where you speak in front of a crowd often.

You’ll eventually get through it, and the exhilaration of actually overcoming your fear will be amazing!

We all feel uncomfortable adapting to change. Even the changing of seasons, clothing size… even good changes can throw us off our comfortable everyday balance.

But we recommend having a bit of patience with yourself and allowing change to be a teacher, helping you become a master of your life and evolving into a better human being. We all desire to live thriving, joyful and prolonged lives.

But to achieve what we want, we ought to be proactive about how we adapt to change in our lives. Refusal and resisting change will just result in you living a sad life.

This is why it’s essential to learn how to be flexible, resilient, and fierce in life because these 3 things are the keys to you successfully acclimating to the constant impact that change can have on your life.
