Having Trouble Earning Respect From Others? These 7 Simple Behaviors Could Explain It

Your jokes tear down people

Jokes are obviously meant to be funny. The trouble with this is that if people don’t know you and vice versa, your jokes could backfire even if they have no intention of being prejudiced or hostile. Saying something like, “Hey, I was just joking,” afterward will be too late.

Even “half-meaning” jokes can cause social suicide, especially if they tear down other people. When this happens, you undermine their self-worth. People will find your humor irritating and won’t want to waste their time talking to you.

Try to be more attentive to how other people respond to your jokes if you wish to gain more respect from others. Be more aware of how they can affect the conversation.

Humor is different for everyone, and while it may be okay to joke around people you’re comfortable with, you might offend someone who would be within earshot of that quip.

Remember, there are enough people who become aggressive towards people who think it’s okay to joke about others in a way that puts them down, and anyone who doesn’t know you will presume that you fall in this category.

You don’t have to stop making jokes. You simply need to find another way to show your sense of humor so you won’t offend others. This would be a good start for earning respect from others.

This was quite interesting. And if wanting and valuing respect from others is your goal, then I think it could be quite helpful. It does ignore one basic point however. You have to WANT to be respected and desire respect from others. There are many people who socially function very well without this need. I’ve always believed respecting myself to be more important.

Think you left out a very important one for us seniors. Just being old often makes a person irrelevant. Not just speaking for myself but have watched others even very interesting people being dismissed while others go on talking about themselves.

Folks with integrity can just BE themselves and don’t need to give nor take any ass-kissing. If you have integrity, you don’t NEED a fan club.

I get along by myself just fine—I WON’T BE INDUCTED INTO PECKING ORDERS UNLESS IT IS ASSERTED THAT I AM AT THE TOP!! Yeah. it saves me a lot of time and trouble to just avoid—-

I agree. Too many people have no integrity these days, The narcissists alone are hard to read. Two different people. They show the world their mask of who they want you to believe they are, while hiding their true selves underneath.. You got to be a well educated person to navigate this new world of ME ME ME entitled society. Another reason its best to not participate. People today are evil and I am not catering to their mental illnesses.

I agree. People today have no integrity and society has a whole lot of mental issues. Old school was best. No one has taught their kids what they need to succeed in life. Generations of entitled brats and people broken from childhood grow up to be narcissists who prey on others disguised by their mask of deceit.

#1 Honesty, was spot on but the rest of this article soon fell apart. You have to build trust with others before the reward of their respect is earned. This takes time.

Trust is earned by developing and demonstrating certain traits. These include; honor, honesty, integrity, and treating others with respect. Having the courage to do the right thing, a commitment to taking care of the people around you, and making things better for everyone.

These are the things that leaders do.
