Communication Is Key

Open and meaningful communication is the most critical predictor of a successful marriage. Especially in this new life stage, it becomes vital to understand your spouse’s fears and desires. The issue is that most couples become complacent.

They’ll chat about their day, the weather, or something else as equally superficial. After retiring, they’ll spend a lot more time together and might soon run out of things to talk about. Have you ever noticed how we tend to formulate a response before someone finishes speaking?

Most men are quick to jump in to “fix the problem.” In these cases, women might just want to be heard as they work through their feelings. Lots of things will change after retiring, further testing your relationship.

It could be spending habits or figuring out what to do with all your newfound free time. Then there’s the possibility of more severe issues. For instance, if one of you was forced into retiring early, that person is probably angry and struggling with a loss of identity.

They’ll feel vulnerable and resentful. This could lead to moodiness and lashing out at their spouse.
