What EXACTLY is brainwashing?

The word brainwashing was first coined in the 50s while the Korean War was happening. It was used to describe how totalitarian regimes were capable of thoroughly indoctrinating American soldiers through a process of propaganda and torture.

Brainwashing is the theory that a person’s root ideas, beliefs, affiliations, and values can be substituted, so much so that they have no control over themselves and can’t think independently or critically. Manipulators wouldn’t call these brainwashing techniques.

They would consider them more like subtle persuasion. So what methods are most commonly used by manipulators?
