The Science of Happiness: 7 Simple Habits to Boost Your Joy in Retirement

3. Find and Pursue a Renewed Purpose

For many people, their job provided a powerful sense of purpose, identity, and structure. When that’s gone, it can leave a significant void. Finding a renewed sense of purpose is a cornerstone of a happy retirement. This doesn’t mean you need to do something world-changing. Purpose is simply about having a reason to get up in the morning that is meaningful *to you*. It’s about using your skills and passions in a way that contributes to something larger than yourself.

This could take many forms: volunteering for a cause you care about, mentoring a younger person, diving deep into a hobby like painting or woodworking, taking a class, or dedicating time to a spiritual or community group. For many, a primary source of purpose comes from the role of a grandparent. This is a profound opportunity to pass on family stories, offer unconditional love, and provide a stable, comforting presence in a child’s life.

When stepping into this role, it’s vital to navigate the intergenerational dynamics with respect. The most helpful approach is to see yourself as a support to the parents, not a replacement or a critic. Your role is to reinforce their rules and routines, creating consistency for the children. Before buying a big-ticket item or planning a special outing, a simple check-in with the parents shows respect: “We were thinking of taking Leo to the science museum on Saturday. Does that work with your family’s schedule and rules?” This simple communication prevents misunderstandings and positions you as a trusted team member.

Your Next Step: Take 15 minutes with a piece of paper and a pen. Create two columns. In the first, list activities you’ve always enjoyed or been good at. In the second, list things you care about in the world (e.g., literacy, animal welfare, your neighborhood, your family’s history). Now, look for overlaps. Could your love of gardening be channeled into a community garden? Could your professional skills be used to help a local nonprofit? Pick one small idea and spend 30 minutes this week researching it online or making one phone call to learn more.
